Recruitment is
a process in which college and university
sororities meet prospective new members. The college Panhellenic
organization organizes Recruitment activities. The Collegiate Panhellenic
Council belongs to the National Panhellenic Council (NPC), which has 26
national sororities as members.
Recruitment or “rush” usually takes place in the
fall and can vary in activities by campus. Students who are interested in
recruitment should contact the Office of Greek Affairs of their campus for
specific information on the date and time of Recruitment. Check your campus
web site for Panhellenic Recruitment information, usually under Student
Affairs or Greek Affairs. In the Kansas-Missouri area, at least one
university has online registration for Recruitment. However, most schools
have the Registration form online.
A Basic outline of Recruitment:
-
1. The first step is Orientation. At
orientation, you will get an overview of Recruitment and you will be
divided into Recruitment groups. A recruitment group leader will be
assigned to each group. The group leader is a sorority member who is
serving Panhellenic during Recruitment. They do not represent their own
sorority during Recruitment nor will they disclose to you their
affiliation. The group leader is a non-biased collegian who will guide you
through the Recruitment process.
-
2. The entire Recruitment process usually lasts
a week and has 3-4 rounds of events or parties. The sororities provide the
events to allow you to learn about their membership as well as sorority
life.
-
3. Recruitment participants must visit each NPC
sorority at least once during the process.
-
4. After the first round, invitations to
subsequent events are sent by the sororities. You may receive invitations;
however, this is a process of mutual selection. This process continues
until the last day of Preference.
-
5. At the completion of the last Preference
event, you will rank your membership choices. Again, through the process
of mutual selection, your choices will possibly be matched with the
sororities’ choices. Participants are strongly encouraged to make more
than one choice.
-
6. Participants should always carefully
consider any bid to join a sorority, even if it is not the participant’s
first choice. There is always the possibility that you could not be
matched.
-
7. For more specific information on
recruitment, as well as specific dates, what to wear, always check with
the Greek Affairs/Student Services offices on your campus.

What is a recommendation and is it needed?
A recommendation is a formal way to be introduced to
a sorority. Alumnae members of sororities may assist you and write a
recommendation for you. To write a recommendation, the alumnae members
need personal background information, similar to a resume you would use
for a job interview.
It is possible that you may not need a
recommendation. Check with your Greek Affairs office of you school to find
out what information you will need to provide.

Groups look for students with the following
qualities:
-
Scholastic ability: Sororities expect students
to have a minimum grade point average and an interest in academic
excellence.
-
Compatibility: Sororities are based on
friendship. It is expected that members can get along with others and will
be able to weather diverse personalities.
-
Involved and Group-Oriented: Sorority membership
work together in groups. Sororities have adopted philanthropies or
charities which are supported by the collegiate members. New members are
encouraged and expected to work with the volunteer activities of the
sororities.
-
Financially Responsible: Sororities are funded
by their current membership. This is a financial obligation that new
members must agree to. New members should discuss all financial matters
with their parents. Along with membership dues and mandatory fees there
are other non-mandatory social activities that you should budget for.
-
Is sorority membership affordable?
Members of Greek organizations are not usually wealthy. Sorority members
have the same financial concerns as any other college student. Sororities
will discuss financial obligations during recruitment.
-
Do sororities haze?
NPC sororities do not haze, and NPC has strict policies against hazing.
Hazing is not a part of responsible Greek life.
